TNA had a PPV last night peeps. Really? You didn't know? Well, yes, in fact, they did. Did I spend my hard earned money on it? Nope. However I can read thankfully, and I checked out the results like most wrestling fans did. A few things caught my eye, both good and bad. This upcoming journey of a blog will share those thoughts on the PPV results and what it's all meant. At least to me.
The show opened with Taz welcoming everyone to the PPV. Seems to have been done well, and it just solidifying my wanting to have a heel commentator in both WWE and TNA. He'd be much better at it than the suck-up babyface role. It's a real shame too about Jerry Lynn's back injury. RVD vs. Sabu I heard wasn't that bad at all, but Lynn and RVD would have easily stolen the show.
Match #1- The FBI defeated Kid Kash, Simon Diamond and Johnny Swinger. As just an average ECW watcher in it's hey-day, I was only familiar with the FBI and Kash. Simon Diamond I new from the early days of TNA. When I heard there was a dance-off, I was instantly glad I passed on an invite to the PPV to watch the NFL Preseason begin. In all honesty though, to say you were there for that and to see what the crowd was like would have been interesting.
Videos aired throughout the PPV showing where former hardcore stars are now and what the promotion meant to them in years previous. I can't imagine what it would have been like for the TNA roster to say they'll be on the show... Just not wrestling.
Match #2- Too Cold Scorpio defeated CW Anderson. I've always enjoyed Scorpio's work and it seemed that he was still in good shape to perform.
Match #3- Stevie Richards defeated P.J. Polaco (Justin Credible). After the match we had The Sandman appear and pretty much lay everyone out with a kendo stick/cane. It seems that's all they used him for but hearing of shots to the head is sickening.
Match #4- Rhino defeated Al Snow and Brother Runt in a Three-Way Dance. Not surprised to see Rhino get the win here, but either way it seemed to have been one of the better matches of the night.
Match #5- Team 3D (with Joel Gertner) defeated Axl Rotten and Kahoneys In a South Philadelphia Street Fight. After the match (With the usual flaming tables spot and... Lightsabers?) The Gangstas and Team 3D brawled with New Jack and Mustafa putting the boots to 3D. I believe the low point of the night is a hug-fest that occurred right after their match. I can't crap on it that much, but when a team BEATS DOWN THE OTHER WITH WEAPONS, how can you hug it out?
It just makes no logical sense and sets wrestling back a handful of years. I love Team 3D, don't get me wrong, but I like to see wrestling logic take the place of a feel good moment. Do that backstage, or if anything, just have The Gangsta's threaten them before hugging it out. Minor things could have been done to make that much more passable in my opinion.
Match #6- Raven defeated Tommy Dreamer In their "Final Showdown". As much as I wanted to like reading the results of this match, anytime kids are involved and shots to the head are done (A la Mick Foley and the Rock back in WWE, footage that was used for the movie Beyond the Mat) it just turns my stomach. It accomplishes nothing in my eyes, at least today. Maybe 15 years ago as I know a lot of things ECW did were "shocking" but ugh. Besides that though, this match at least told somewhat of a story.
Match #7- Rob Van Dam (accompanied by Bill Alfonso) defeated Sabu in the main event (non title match). The toast isn't a bad thing, at least not as much as the tag match earlier in the card, as ROH does similar stuff at times with the code of honor, but I had to take away from the last match how sad it is that people can call his a "helluva PPV". Sorry Tommy, good effort, and you saw a lot of it, but I think it fell very, very flat. They can't deny that. Dixie I'm sure feels good to help the ECW crew have a final farewell, but sometimes business and common sense has to step in the way.
In a nutshell though, I'm glad this ECW/TNA thing has run it's course. I guess not because it was the worst thing wrestling has seen, albeit close to it, but mainly because TNA has the talent to run a successful promotion. I hope in time the talent has the chance to do so before frustration takes over and they jump ship to another line of work. We'll see how things rebound though come Thursday night.
To wrap this up, one thing that HAS to be mentioned though throughout this show, was the reports of consistent cane/chair shots to the head. I don't care if that's how things were done in the past, now, it's just stupid, uncalled for, and NOT needed. As I watch a previous SummerSlam right now from 2001, I'm seeing Chris Kanyon, one of the many performers in the business who lost their life way to soon. More than likely, due to the toll actions like there was on the ECW/TNA show last night displayed.
